Williams Three-Run Walk-Off Homer in Tenth Gives Cleveland 6-5 Win
|
For six innings the game sat perfectly still, tied at three, and the wet October air at Jacobs Field held that particular quality of silence that is not really silence but forty-four thousand people holding a single breath between their teeth. Charles Nagy had settled after Daulton's bases-clearing double in the first — a 111-mile-per-hour line drive into the left-center gap that seemed, briefly, like the only sentence the night intended to write — and Al Leiter, who had given up home runs to Grissom in the third (415 feet, a ball that disappeared into the rain beyond the wall in left-center) and Thome leading off the fourth (376 feet, first pitch, not a question but a statement), found the low corners and kept Cleveland's bats honest through the sixth. Three-all, and the innings passed like identical cards drawn from the same shuffled deck.
In the tenth, with Michael Jackson having hit Devon White, Assenmacher inherited the mess and watched the runners move station to station before Jim Eisenreich lined a single to right at 103 miles per hour and the Marlins led 4-3. Moises Alou's sacrifice fly scored White from third, and now it was 5-3. Two runs, the old arithmetic of October cruelty, and the shape of the evening began to look familiar — Cleveland trailing in extras, the window closing, the ending that this city has rehearsed in every sport and every decade threatening to reassert itself one final time.
Robb Nen retired Thome to start the bottom of the tenth. Then Manny Ramirez, who had done nothing all night, stood in for nine pitches — fouling off four, taking three balls, refusing to concede the at-bat — and walked. Felix Heredia came on and Tony Fernandez lined a 1-1 pitch down the first-base line, Ramirez sliding into second. Matt Williams stepped in with two aboard and one out, the man who had singled to start the rally in the third and flied out with two aboard in the fourth. On an 0-1 count, Heredia left a pitch where Williams could reach it, and Williams drove it 372 feet into the October rain in right field — a three-run home run, a walkoff, the final word in the final telling, and for once the ending that Cleveland has always deserved.
