Indians' Five-Run Comeback Proves Fleeting; Florida Erupts for 17
Charles Nagy lasted seven outs. He managed two of them in reasonable comfort before Bobby Bonilla walked on seven pitches to open the second, Darren Daulton slashed a double at 110 miles an hour, and a passed ball let the first run drift home unmolested. By the time Nagy departed with one out in the third — five walks issued, six runs charged to his line — Cleveland trailed 6-1 and the bullpen was already in triage.

For one half-inning in the fifth, this game wore the costume of a comeback. David Justice drove a three-run home run 378 feet to right on a 1-0 pitch, Sandy Alomar followed with a solo shot to left — back-to-back off Al Leiter, who had looked entirely comfortable — Matt Williams singled home the tying run, and Grissom's single scored the go-ahead. Cleveland led 7-6. The crowd believed it was watching something. It was. An intermission.

Florida scored four in the sixth on Sheffield's single, Alou tagging from third on Bonilla's sacrifice fly, and Daulton's two-run homer erasing what remained. They scored four more in the seventh behind Bonilla's two-run double off Mesa. Charles Johnson added a three-run homer in the ninth off the spent Jaret Wright, because by then the Marlins were simply piling fruit on a cart already tipped. The final: Florida 17, Cleveland 9. Thirty-four hits between them, four hours and forty-two minutes, six Cleveland pitchers summoned and discarded. In some other shuffling of this particular October night, the game ends with Justice's home run still ringing. In this one, Daulton scored four times, touched every base that existed, and was named MVP of a game that contained too much of itself.
