Indians Rally From Two Down; Justice Homer in Fifth Seals 4-3 Win
|
Moises Alou's solo home run in the third — 416 feet into the rain, the longest ball anyone hit all night — gave Florida a 2-0 lead and the comfortable feeling that comes with having Charles Nagy on the ropes. Craig Counsell's RBI single had already plated a run in the second. The Marlins had ten hits by evening's end, left ten men on base, and lost anyway. That is the kind of game this was.
Cleveland's fourth inning began with Justice lining a single through the left-center gap at 111 miles per hour, Alomar punching an infield hit through the shortstop hole, and — after Thome struck out — Ramirez grounding one through the middle at 105 on 1-1. Justice scored on Ramirez's single when Devon White's throw went to third instead of home. Fernandez's sacrifice fly scored Alomar. Vizquel's infield single — a dribbler that died on the grass — scored Ramirez. Three runs on five hits, and suddenly Cleveland led 3-2.
David Justice opened the fifth by hitting Leiter's first pitch 362 feet to right, and that was the last run Cleveland would need. It was also Leiter's last inning. In this fifty-seventh deal of the same hand, Justice collected two hits and two runs and the MVP award that someone kept handing him as though for the first time.
Jose Mesa's wild pitch in the eighth scored Daulton and made it 4-3, but Michael Jackson retired the side in the ninth — Alou's fly out, a hit batter, a strikeout, and a fielder's choice. The margin held. One run, and that was enough.
