Justice Walk-Off Double Caps Ninth-Inning Rally; Cleveland Wins 5-4
|
David Justice went 3-for-4 with a walk in the fifty-fifth iteration of this October evening, and each time he came to the plate he altered the architecture of the game. His solo home run in the first — 387 feet into the damp night off Al Leiter — announced that Cleveland would not go quietly. When Darren Daulton's two-run double and Edgar Renteria's two-run single had rebuilt Florida's lead to 4-2 by the seventh, Justice was still there, still waiting for another turn.
Tony Fernandez gave him that turn. On a 3-2 count in the bottom of the seventh, Fernandez drove a Leiter fastball 389 feet to left-center, the ball disappearing into rain that had been falling since first pitch. One run back now instead of two. In the eighth, Dennis Cook uncorked a wild pitch that moved Manny Ramirez to second, and Fernandez grounded a single through the hole to tie it. A man having that kind of night twice in consecutive innings is either blessed or trapped in a loop he cannot name.
Robb Nen entered the ninth to protect the tie and immediately walked Omar Vizquel on five pitches that missed progressively wider. Bip Roberts reached on a fielder's choice, and then Justice — always Justice — ripped a 1-0 fastball down the right-field line for a double, sending Roberts to third. Sandy Alomar's sacrifice fly to left was a formality. Roberts jogged home, and 44,880 rose in the rain as if they had never done this before.
Michael Jackson needed nine pitches to hold the Marlins scoreless in the top of the ninth. The win was his. The game belonged to Justice.
