Nen Unravels in Ninth; Fernandez Walk-Off Single Lifts Indians 3-2
For seven and a half innings this was a game played in whispers. Charles Nagy struck out eight Marlins in six innings of two-hit ball. Al Leiter matched him through eight, allowing two hits and a single run — a walk, a sacrifice bunt, a stolen base, another walk, and a sacrifice fly in the sixth, which is five acts of craft to produce one run, and was all Cleveland could manage against a left-hander who seemed to know what was coming before the batters did.

Florida's offense was no louder. Bobby Bonilla walked on four pitches in the second, and Charles Johnson doubled off the wall in left to bring him home — a 111-mile-per-hour line drive that was the hardest-hit ball of the night. That was the extent of the damage. Nagy struck out Sheffield twice, retired the side in order in the fourth, and left after six with a 1-1 tie. Then Devon White opened the eighth by driving Assenmacher's 0-2 pitch 370 feet to right, and the Marlins led 2-1, and that, it appeared, was how this particular retelling would end.

Robb Nen came on to save it. He did not. Justice walked on five pitches. Alomar singled through the hole, and Justice, running on contact, never stopped — safe at third. Then a wild pitch, bouncing past Johnson to the screen, and Justice trotted home with the tying run. Nen walked Thome. Ramirez flew out deep enough to move Alomar to third. Tony Fernandez, with the count 2-1, punched a single up the middle at 105 miles per hour, and Alomar crossed the plate standing up. Cleveland 3, Florida 2. The 44,880 stood in the rain as though they had always known it would end this way — though of course they hadn't. Nobody ever does, no matter how many times the cards are dealt.
