Leiter Breezes Through Seven Strong; Marlins Rout Cleveland 7-1
Al Leiter threw the kind of game that makes a man wonder why anyone bothers with offense at all. Seven innings, five hits, one run, ninety-five pitches — and the one run was a solo home run by Sandy Alomar Jr in the fourth, 361 feet to left, which is to say it was the sort of damage a pitcher of Leiter's temperament files under acceptable losses. The final was 7-1, Florida, and it was never in genuine doubt after the fourth inning.

The Marlins built their lead in patient increments. Edgar Renteria singled and stole second in the third, reaching third on Eisenreich's single behind him, and scored on a Sheffield sacrifice fly — a manufactured run of the old school, stolen base and all. Charles Johnson hit a solo homer with one out in the fourth, 355 feet to left on a 2-2 pitch, a ball that barely cleared the wall but cleared it decisively enough. Devon White singled, stole second, and scored on Renteria's single through the hole, and it was 3-0 before Cleveland had done anything worth recording.

Alomar's home run in the bottom of the fourth made it 3-1, and for two innings the 44,880 could entertain the notion that Nagy might settle in and the lineup might find Leiter's seams. Neither happened. The sixth brought four runs: Eisenreich doubled home White, Alou singled home Eisenreich and Nagy was done. Plunk walked Sheffield and Bonilla to load the bases, and then Daulton — working a full count, fouling off pitch after pitch in the rain — laced a single to left-center that scored two more. The lead was six. Leiter kept pitching as though unaware anything remarkable had occurred behind him.

Cleveland put runners on in the seventh and eighth and scored in neither inning. In this particular dealing of the cards, the home team simply drew nothing worth playing.
