Back-to-Back Homers in Fifth Lift Indians Past Florida 4-3
|
For three innings nothing happened, which is to say the pitching was good and the bats were patient and 44,880 people sat in the rain waiting for someone to do something. Then in the fourth Manny Ramirez did something. He drove Al Leiter's second pitch 423 feet to right-center, a line drive that left the bat at 98 miles per hour and never stopped climbing. It was 1-0, and the quiet was broken.
Charles Johnson answered immediately in the fifth — a solo shot to left-center, 403 feet, nearly the same distance as the one Ramirez had hit an inning earlier but to the opposite field, as though the evening were answering itself. The game was tied for exactly two batters. Bip Roberts singled and stole second, and David Justice unloaded a 2-2 pitch 404 feet to right-center — the same coordinates as Ramirez's blast, the same distance, a different outcome entirely. Sandy Alomar Jr followed with another, 344 feet to left, and it was 4-1 before Leiter could record a second out. Two home runs in one half-inning, each a discrete act of violence against the October sky.
Florida chipped back. Sheffield singled home Eisenreich in the sixth. In the eighth, Jose Mesa allowed two singles and a sacrifice fly from Bobby Bonilla that made it 4-3. The tying run stood at second base. But Mesa struck out Charles Johnson to end the threat, and Michael Jackson needed eight pitches to retire the side in the ninth — White, Counsell, Renteria, gone on a fly ball, a grounder, and a called third strike. In this forty-seventh arrangement of the night, the margin was one run. It always felt like less.
