Nagy Goes the Distance, Blanks Florida on Two Hits in Game 3
Charles Nagy threw 109 pitches and needed every one of exactly none of the Florida Marlins. Two hits. Two walks. Nine innings of a man who looked as if he had done this before — which, in a sense beyond his knowing, he has. The final was 7-0, and the zero was the point. In forty-six shufflings of this October night, the Marlins do not often go home without crossing the plate. When they do, it is because Nagy's sinker finds the low corners like a dog finding its bed, and the Florida bats produce nothing but grounders to the left side and lazy flies to center.

Jim Thome opened the account in the second with a two-run home run on a 2-1 pitch from Al Leiter — 398 feet to left-center, high enough to disappear briefly into the rain before dropping beyond the wall. Sandy Alomar Jr had singled ahead of him, fighting through an 0-2 count to line one into shallow left-center at 107 miles per hour. After that it was 2-0 and the evening had its shape.

Leiter held together for three more innings, but in the sixth he walked the ballpark: Ramirez hit by pitch, Fernandez reached on a fielder's choice that forced Ramirez at second, Williams walked, Grissom walked. Bases full, one out, and Jim Leyland had seen enough. Felix Heredia came in and threw one strike to Omar Vizquel, who drove it to left-center at 109 miles per hour. Three men scored. Roberts singled behind him, and Vizquel scored standing up. The board read 6-0 and the rain fell a little harder, as though even the weather had made up its mind.

Vizquel added another double in the eighth, his fourth RBI, and Nagy went out for the ninth as if declining an umbrella in a drizzle. Eisenreich flied out, Alou grounded out, and Sheffield went down looking on a full count — bat on shoulder, watching a strike he could not quite believe. The Marlins managed a Charles Johnson double and a Devon White single across nine innings. That was all. Nagy shook Alomar's hand and walked off into a night that, for once, asked nothing more of him.
