Nagy, Plunk Combine to Shut Out Marlins; Indians Win 4-0 in Game 3
|
Charles Nagy did something rare on this particular Tuesday night at Jacobs Field: he made the Florida Marlins look ordinary. In forty-five versions of this October evening, the script usually calls for fireworks — crooked numbers, bullpen implosions, the kind of game that leaves scorecards illegible. Not this time. Nagy worked five and a third, scattering four hits and four walks, and never allowed any of it to matter. The zeros accumulated on the scoreboard like rain collecting in the gutters above the upper deck.
Cleveland built its lead the workmanlike way, without a single home run. In the first, Bip Roberts fought off an 0-2 count for a single, advanced on David Justice's hit, and scored when Sandy Alomar Jr lined one to left-center at 112 miles per hour — hard enough that Devon White's throw home arrived after Roberts did. In the second, Tony Fernandez singled, Matt Williams doubled him to third, and Justice drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the run. Leiter was laboring already, his game moving in a direction he could not alter.
The fourth finished him. Vizquel doubled into the left-center gap, Roberts hammered the first pitch into right-center — 112 again, as though the number were fixed in the evening's architecture — and Alomar's sacrifice fly to center brought Roberts home standing. Leiter walked off after five innings, eleven hits allowed.
Eric Plunk closed it with three and two-thirds innings of nothing: no hits, no walks, four strikeouts. The last three Marlins — Daulton, Johnson, White — went down on strikes and a popup to the mound. Final: Cleveland 4, Florida 0. In forty-five tellings of this night, the Indians rarely win one this quietly. When they do, it has the quality of a secret kept.
