Florida Explodes After Tie Game; Marlins Rout Cleveland 14-1 in Game 3
Through four innings it was a proper game — Alou's groundball double and Sheffield's single giving Florida a run in the first, Alomar answering with a first-pitch home run to left in the fourth, 356 feet, the ball vanishing into the October dark with the casual finality of a period at the end of a sentence. The score was 1-1 and Leiter and Nagy were working quickly, two professionals settling into the cold night air.

The fifth inning undid all of it. Johnson singled, Counsell walked, and Renteria fought back from 0-1 to work a full count before grounding a single through short that scored the go-ahead run. Eisenreich singled home two more. Then Moises Alou, down 1-2, turned on a pitch and hit it 374 feet into the left field seats — a two-run home run that gave Florida a 6-1 lead and sent Nagy to the showers with the unhurried walk of a man who knows the evening is over. Plunk entered and promptly allowed a walk, an error, and a wild pitch, and by the time the inning ended seven runs had scored and the game had crossed some invisible line beyond which competition ceases and endurance begins.

Leiter pitched seven innings. He allowed five hits and one run — the Alomar home run and nothing else — and threw with the serene authority of a man who has been handed a twelve-run lead and intends to honor it. Heredia closed out the final two innings. Florida added two in the sixth on Renteria's solo home run, 394 feet, and a Sheffield groundout that scored Eisenreich, and four more in the ninth on four walks, a wild pitch, and a Counsell single, the last of these feeling less like baseball than like a team running out the clock on a sport that does not have one. The final was 14-1, and somewhere in the middle innings the 44,880 in attendance had stopped watching a World Series game and started watching weather.
