Cleveland Erupts After Alou Ties It, Rolls Past Florida in Game 3
For two innings Leiter and Nagy traded zeroes with the quiet mutual respect of men who have faced each other before — and in some sense they have, though neither would know it. Florida broke through in the third on Moises Alou's two-run single, a full-count line drive to left-center that scored Johnson and White and gave the Marlins the look of a team settling in for a comfortable evening.

The fourth inning disabused them. Cleveland sent eleven men to the plate and scored seven runs on eight hits, none of them particularly violent — Alomar and Thome opened with back-to-back singles, Fernandez loaded the bases with a liner through the left side, and Williams drove in two with a ground single through short. Vizquel doubled home two more, Roberts singled home another, and that finished Leiter's night. Heredia inherited Roberts at first and promptly lost him: a pickoff throw sailed into center field, and Justice doubled him home to make it 6-2. Alomar singled in Justice to make it 7-2. The inning took twenty minutes and required no home runs, no spectacular plays — just singles and doubles accumulating with the steady insistence of rain filling a basement.

Nagy, who had given up those two runs in the third and nothing else, continued pitching into the late innings with the demeanor of a man whose commute home has already been decided. Plunk closed it in the ninth. The final was 8-2, and the game had effectively ended in the fourth — everything after was ceremony, the clock running out on a contest that had already been settled by the patient, unglamorous work of putting the ball in play eight times in a single inning.
