Nagy, Leiter Duel Through 22 Hits; Cleveland Squeezes Out Game 3 Win
|
Twenty-two hits between the two clubs, and only three runs — the arithmetic of a night when both pitchers worked in and around traffic all evening, stranding runners the way October cold strands sound in the upper deck, deadening everything before it can travel. Charles Nagy and Al Leiter matched each other through inning after inning of base hits that went nowhere, singles that died on the vine, doubles that rotted at second base. The Marlins put eleven men on base and scored once. Cleveland put eleven on and scored twice. The difference, as it so often is in this particular version of the game, was a matter of sequence rather than talent.
Moises Alou's solo home run in the third — a 360-foot fly to left on a 3-1 pitch that barely cleared the wall — stood as the only run for two full innings, the kind of slim lead that makes a ballpark hold its breath on every fly ball. Matt Williams finally broke through against Leiter in the fifth, fighting to a 2-2 count and then grounding a single through the left side at 109 miles per hour. Grissom walked, Vizquel singled to left-center on a 1-0 pitch, and Williams scored standing up, the throw never coming. One-all, and the game settled back into its pattern of mutual frustration, runners reaching and dying, both teams circling the same drain.
In the ninth, Robb Nen entered to hold the tie and immediately lost his footing. Williams hit a fly to left that the fielder misplayed for an error, Grissom flew out, and then Vizquel beat out an infield single on a 2-1 count — a grounder past first at 101 miles per hour that had no business being a hit but was. Roberts followed with a looping single to left on the second pitch, Williams broke from third on contact, and the throw from left arrived a half-step after his foot touched the plate. Cleveland 2, Florida 1, the game ending not with thunder but with the soft geometry of a ball finding grass in precisely the right place, once more, as if it had always been going to land there.
