Indians Grind Out 8-5 Game 3 Victory Over Marlins
|
There are nights when a baseball game settles into its shape early and never loses it, when the outcome is decided not by one swing but by a slow accumulation of competence on one side and futility on the other. This was such a night — Cleveland 8, Florida 5, the final score suggesting more drama than actually occurred. Moises Alou hit a towering home run to deep right-center in the first inning, 417 feet into the October rain, and for perhaps three minutes the Marlins held a lead. Then Matt Williams drove a two-run shot into the left-field seats in the second, Omar Vizquel doubled to the gap to score Grissom, and Bip Roberts singled home Vizquel, and the Indians led 4-1, and that was essentially the shape of things for the remaining seven innings.
Roberts was the evening's quiet engine — four hits in four at-bats, three stolen bases, a night so complete it hardly seemed to belong to this particular game, as though he had brought it with him from somewhere else. He singled to start the fifth, stole second, tagged to third on Thome's deep fly, and stood there waiting for Ramirez, who launched a three-run home run to right on a 1-1 count that made it 7-1 and finished Leiter's night. The Marlins' starter lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowed eight hits and seven runs, and trudged off with the rain collecting on the bill of his cap in a way that looked, from the upper deck, like something between exhaustion and resignation.
Florida hit solo home runs in the eighth and ninth — Sheffield and Charles Johnson, both off Eric Plunk — but by then the ballpark had already begun to thin, the upper deck half-empty, and the sounds of those balls leaving the yard carried no particular urgency with them. Nagy earned the win with six solid innings, Jackson needed only seven pitches to close the ninth, and the 44,880 at Jacobs Field filed out into the wet night with the easy satisfaction of a game whose conclusion had never truly been in doubt.
