Nagy Shuts Down Florida Through Six, Indians Pull Away for Game 3 Win
|
Charles Nagy worked six innings through steady rain and a 25-mile-per-hour crosswind, allowing three runs — one earned — on three hits, and for a long while this twenty-second game belonged to his cutter and to the geometry of the Cleveland defense behind him. Ramirez hit a solo home run to deep left in the second on a 2-2 count, the ball disappearing over the wall in that heavy way fly balls do when the air is thick and 47 degrees. Roberts doubled home Grissom in the third. The Indians led 3-1, and the evening had the shape of a professional, competent victory — the kind that earns a paragraph in the morning paper and nothing more.
The seventh changed everything, both ways, with the feverish illogic of a game that has lost all interest in making sense. Florida sent nine men to the plate against Assenmacher, who walked three of them and watched the other damage accumulate on singles by Sheffield and Bonilla — runners sent home on every throw, none of them cut down, five runs scoring before Johnson finally struck out looking to end it. The Marlins led 6-4 and the crowd had gone still beneath their umbrellas.
Then Al Leiter, who had pitched six adequate innings of his own, came back out for the seventh and could no longer locate the strike zone. Roberts singled to lead off, and Leiter walked Justice on four pitches. A wild pitch moved the runners. Alomar doubled into the right-center gap to tie the game, and Leiter was finished. Dennis Cook inherited the wreckage and added to it — Thome singled, Grissom singled, Vizquel singled to load the bases, and finally, with three runs already home, Roberts drew a walk that forced in Matt Williams from third. The winning run for Cleveland, walked home. Three errors apiece, a combined seventeen runs, and somewhere in the cold machinery of this October night, a sense that the Marlins had lost the game in a manner that more closely resembled a little league team than a group of professionals - a loss whose embarrassment lingers long after the box score.
