Cleveland Edges Florida 3-2 in Game 3 After Late Comeback
For four and a half innings the fifteenth iteration of this night belonged to Al Leiter and Devon White — Leiter working economically through a Cleveland lineup that could not square him up, White manufacturing both Florida runs with the sort of individual brilliance that makes a team sport feel briefly like a solo performance. He doubled home Charles Johnson in the second, then singled, advanced on a wild pitch, stole third, and tagged up on a fly ball to left in the fifth, scoring on a Cliff Floyd sacrifice fly. It was 2-0 and the 44,880 at Jacobs Field had grown quiet in that particular way a crowd goes quiet when it senses the evening slipping away.

Then the bottom of the fifth, two outs, nobody on after Vizquel grounded into a double play. Bip Roberts walked on seven pitches — the at-bat that unlocked everything. David Justice, even in the count at 2-2, fouled off a pitch, then drove a full-count fastball 345 feet into the right-field seats for a two-run homer. Sandy Alomar Jr. followed immediately with a solo shot to left, 359 feet, on a 1-1 count. Three runs, two swings, and the game had inverted itself entirely. Cleveland 3, Florida 2.

In the seventh inning the rain that had been misting all evening thickened into something the umpires could no longer ignore, and play stopped for nineteen minutes. When it resumed, whatever thread of momentum Florida might have gathered in the interim had been severed — Leiter was gone, replaced by relievers who would hold Cleveland scoreless but could not conjure a run of their own. The delay acted as a door closing: the Marlins managed nothing off Paul Assenmacher through the seventh and eighth, and Michael Jackson struck out two in a perfect ninth. The final was 3-2, decided once in the fifth inning and then confirmed again by the rain, as though the weather itself had chosen sides in this particular deal of the cards.
