Indians Outlast Marlins in 12-Inning Game 3 Marathon
Five hours and eight minutes is a long time to spend inside a single baseball game, and longer still when you have the uncanny suspicion that you have spent this particular October Tuesday night at Jacobs Field before — that Devon White has already hit this second-inning home run into the rain, that the Marlins have already built this 3-0 lead, that all of it has already happened and will happen again in some arrangement you cannot quite name. White finished 3-for-4 with two walks, a stolen base, and the kind of evening that belongs to a man playing for the winning side, except that he wasn't, because this game had twelve innings and a ending that belonged entirely to Matt Williams.

The shape of the thing resisted summary. Florida led 3-0 after White's two-run blast in the second, trailed 5-4 after Cleveland's three-run fifth, then retook the lead in the seventh when Charles Johnson drew a bases-loaded walk off Eric Plunk to score Moises Alou, and a wild pitch extended it further by bringing Sheffield home from third — the kind of runs that arrive without anyone swinging a bat, as if the game itself had decided to intervene. By the eighth inning Florida led 8-5 and Felix Heredia was on the mound, and the 44,880 in attendance might reasonably have begun collecting their coats. Instead, Jim Thome walked on eight pitches, Manny Ramirez walked on five, and Robb Nen was summoned to hold the lead. Williams fought through a 2-2 count to line a single to left-center that scored Thome from second. Then Vizquel singled to right, and two more runs came home on the throw, and it was 8-8, and nobody was leaving.

Michael Jackson threw four scoreless innings of relief through the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth — a performance of such quiet, grinding excellence that it nearly vanished inside the noise of everything else. In the bottom of the twelfth, Thome singled off Dennis Cook, advanced to second on a wild pitch from Livan Hernandez, and stood there with two outs while Williams came to the plate. The count went to 1-1. The ball traveled 414 feet into the wet darkness beyond the right-center-field wall, and the final score was 10-8, and the game was over at last — though in some other version of tonight it might still be going, the two teams trading blows until the rain finally wins.
