Leiter Shuts Down Cleveland, Marlins Win 1-0 Gem
|
There are nights when baseball reduces itself to its barest elements — a man throwing, a man swinging, a geometry of leather and distance — and in this tenth iteration of October twenty-first the game arrived at something close to silence: Florida 1, Cleveland 0, nine innings played in three hours and twenty-one minutes, and when it was over the forty-four thousand sat in the rain as if waiting for the rest of it to arrive. It never did. Al Leiter threw eight innings of five-hit shutout ball, striking out eight, walking only one, working with the unhurried precision of a man who had somehow found the one version of this night in which no Cleveland bat could solve him. Robb Nen needed nine pitches to retire the side in the ninth. Eight of them were strikes.
The game's single run was modest enough in its construction: Devon White blooped a single into left-center in the second inning, stole second while Craig Counsell occupied Nagy's attention, and then Edgar Renteria — who would finish the night three for five, the only batter on either side who seemed truly comfortable — grounded a 1-0 pitch into the shortstop hole, the ball finding that particular channel between Vizquel and the bag that opens for perhaps a quarter-second. White came around from second, beating Grissom's throw to the plate, and that was all there would be. One run, constructed from a single, a stolen base, and another single. The old arithmetic of the small game.
Cleveland had its moments of agitation — Vizquel singling in the eighth, Roberts bunting him over, two runners aboard with one out and the tying run in scoring position — but Leiter struck out Justice and induced Alomar to ground weakly to short, and the moment dissolved like breath in cold air. In the top of the ninth, Marquis Grissom threw out Renteria at the plate on what should have been an insurance run, a perfect one-hop strike from center to catcher, but by then the insurance was unnecessary. The night belonged to Leiter, who pitched as though he had always known this particular arrangement of events would ask only one run of him, and that he would make it hold.
