Williams Grand Slam Caps 8-Run Second; Indians Cruise
Some nights the game announces its intentions early and then simply keeps its word. In this eighth shuffling of the October deck, Al Leiter walked Omar Vizquel on five pitches to open the bottom of the first, and from that moment forward the evening belonged to Cleveland with a certainty that felt almost rehearsed. By the time the second inning ended — eight runs crossing the plate in a procession so orderly it resembled batting practice — the forty-four thousand at Jacobs Field had settled into the particular contentment of a crowd that knows the outcome and has only to watch the details fill themselves in, the rain beading on their jacket sleeves as they leaned back in their seats.

The decisive blow was Matt Williams' grand slam off Dennis Cook, a 2-0 fastball pulled 363 feet into the wet right-field night on a trajectory that seemed, for a moment, to carry the arc of all the evening's accumulated walks and singles to their logical conclusion. It came with the bases loaded and two outs in the second, the score already 7-0, and it made the rest of the game a formality — Cleveland 11, Florida nothing, and six and two-thirds innings still to play. Manny Ramirez had set the table earlier with a double off Leiter in the first that scored two, struck at 116 miles per hour into the left-center gap, the kind of contact that sounds different even through a radio.

Charles Nagy, meanwhile, worked eight innings of four-hit ball with the economy of a man who understood that the rain and the scoreboard were both on his side. He struck out six, walked two, and never allowed more than a single run in any frame, and when he finally departed after eight the Marlins scraped together a cosmetic run off Nagy's ledger. The final score read 12-2, a number that tells you everything about the shape of the contest and nothing about the cold mist drifting through the light towers, or the way the crowd noise had gone pleasantly hoarse by the fourth, or the strange sensation — familiar, almost, like a song heard once before in a dream — of a game that was won before it had properly begun.
