Indians Erupt for 11 Runs, Blow Out Marlins in Game 3
|
Once more the lineup cards were exchanged at home plate, once more Charles Nagy took the mound in the October drizzle, and in the fifth dealing of this particular hand, everything that could go right for Cleveland did — methodically, accumulatively, with the patience of a team that seemed to know it had all night. Nagy held Florida to three hits through seven innings, working with the unhurried efficiency of a man turning off lights in a house he knows by feel, and the offense behind him built its lead the way water rises: an inch at a time until you notice the room is flooded.
Manny Ramirez opened the scoring in the second with a solo home run to right, 378 feet on a 1-0 pitch, the sort of casual violence that barely interrupts the rhythm of an evening. The fourth brought three more — Vizquel lifting a sacrifice fly to score Ramirez from third, a Daulton error putting Roberts aboard and moving runners into position, and Justice lining a single through the right side to plate two. Then the fifth — Ramirez singling, Fernandez singling, Williams singling to load the bases, Grissom walking to force one in, and Omar Vizquel ripping a double down the left-field line that cleared every last runner from the paths, the ball skipping past the diving third baseman at 102 miles per hour. It was 8-0, and Bobby Bonilla's solo homer in the sixth — 365 feet on a 3-1 count — registered as little more than a footnote.
The eighth was gratuitous, even cruel. Sandy Alomar Jr. drove a three-run homer to left on a 1-2 pitch, 364 feet, and before the crowd had finished its exhalation, Matt Williams crushed another three-run shot to right on a full count — 383 feet, 108 miles per hour off the bat, a line drive that never rose above twenty feet and simply refused to land in fair territory inside the wall. Felix Heredia lasted one out and gave up five hits; Livan Hernandez mopped up the final two. The score read 14-3, the kind of number that belongs on a football field, and somewhere in the mathematics of infinite repetition, even a blowout like this must happen — the deck shuffled so heavily in one direction that the evening becomes less a contest than a demonstration.
